The Bustling Brown Center

Shaarey Zedek High Holiday Services with The Brown Program

The Bustling Brown Center

By Jo Strausz Rosen

Activities during the Jewish Holidays at The Dorothy & Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program have been engaging people living with dementia and their family care partners. Two locations in West Bloomfield and Southfield are open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Brown Program helps people living with dementia stay purposefully involved in programs such as music, art, yoga and other physical exercise, cooking, group discussions and cognitive exercises.  When participants spend the day, or even a morning or afternoon, their care partners benefit by regaining time for themselves, knowing their family member is cared for and occupied in meaningful activities.

People who are enrolled at the Brown Day Program enjoy individualized attention, socialization and recreation, therapeutic activities, opportunities for creative expression in music and art, health monitoring, access to nutritious, kosher meals and snacks, and spiritual and cultural support. During these special Jewish holidays, many activities were shared:

  • An explanation of Rosh Hashanah, it’s history and meaning via trivia, music, and foods including apples and honey with challah
  • A beautiful Kol Nidre service open to the whole community
  • The meaning of Sukkot and its lively history was explained and accompanied by art activities with gourds
