Our community chaplain, Rabbi Dovid Polter, makes himself available to residents in every JSL community. Rabbi Polter offers regular Torah study classes, learning sessions, and weekly Shabbat and holiday programs. He can also work one-on-one with residents who enjoy studying with him. Working alongside our life enrichment team, Rabbi Polter ensures each JSL community has a yiddishe tam (Jewish flavor) to enhance our monthly calendar.
Rabbi Polter also makes connections in the community for volunteers to offer additional Jewish programming, such as High Holiday visits, Sukkah strolls, Purim Parcels, and Seder leaders, to our JSL communities. Rabbi Polter also educates and informs our staff on Jewish practices and holidays. He offers regular in-service training to ensure our team has the knowledge to provide the special touches one might expect when living in a Jewish community.
In addition to serving the residents in our JSL communities, Rabbi Polter is also dedicated to serving Jewish older adults residing in nursing home communities throughout Metro Detroit, helping to ensure that no Jewish person is forgotten. Rabbi Polter supports these communities in offering some Jewish programming and offers one-on-one visits with individuals we learn about whose day would be enhanced with a visit. Rabbi Polter can often enjoy Jewish music with a nursing home resident or bring them a sweet treat for Shabbat.
Available to both our JSL residents and community members, Rabbi Polter offers weekly Shabbat greetings for those who desire such a call and longer thoughts about the weekly Torah portion on his Shabbat Shalom Weekly Message line. During Passover, he also records a brief Seder service for those who cannot access a Seder.
He is also a weekly contributor to our Shabbat Shalom e-newsletter, which you can subscribe to here.
