As a result of the overwhelming tragedies that Holocaust survivors experienced, they typically struggle with feelings of anxiety and depression more profoundly than those in the general population. Additionally, as they age, Survivors commonly experience a compounding sense of loss. Their declining health and independence can trigger events as they may feel greater isolation and powerlessness.
The Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families (PHSF) is designed to address the unique needs of aging Survivors using traditional and innovative programming. Utilizing a trauma-based approach to care, each interaction is designed to create a safe space where survivors can share their fears and anxieties, encourage one another, support their resilience and strengths, enjoy camaraderie, decrease isolation, and receive counseling from a highly skilled psychotherapist when requested.
The PHSF helps Survivors know they are not alone. Our community continues to show respect and care for aging Survivors through these unique and vital programs, which are free of charge. The PHSF is run by psychologist Dr. Charles Silow, a son of Survivors and expert in providing trauma-informed care.
The PHSF also offers Portraits of Honor: Our Michigan Holocaust Survivors. This unique electronic catalogue of Michigan Survivors can be accessed online at https://www.portraitsofhonor.org/. This resource offers information about each survivor, their experiences, a map of their journey and their unique messages to future generations. The database can also be accessed through digital displays at the Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. An actual gallery of photographs of Michigan based survivors is also part of the PHSF and can be viewed at the Zekelman Holocaust Center.
