REBOOT

REBOOT

As we prepare for the High Holidays during the sacred Jewish month of Elul, we can search our souls, read, attend services and, as modern Jews, use the internet to find inspiration. I listen to podcasts like Unorthodox Unorthodox Podcast | Tablet Magazine and read from the ancient books of our Jewish people, the Tanach, to remind me that each year, we can reboot ourselves, as we prepare to reflect on who we are and what we believe and how we can better ourselves in the coming New Year.

Speaking of reboot, many of us are familiar with the 20-year-old Jewish arts and culture non-profit organization with the same name. Reboot reimagines and reinforces Jewish thought and traditions. Their website says: “Reboot is a research and development platform for the Jewish World, to catalyze creators, artists, entrepreneurs and activists to produce experiences and products that evolve the Jewish conversation and transform society.” Check out the entire website, and in particular, their blog. “The Jewish High Holidays are meant to be a radical time. Set against the backdrop of our mortality, these Days of Awe are designed to crack open our hearts, allowing us to address the pressing needs of our lives, communities and the world.” Download Reboot’s 8-page High Holiday Resource Guide | Reboot (rebooting.com)

JSL residents have been interviewed and filmed by Reboot creatives over the years and we are grateful for our collaboration with them. All of this awesomeness can be found on Reboot’s website here: New Blog Posts Exploring Jewish Ideas and Traditions | Reboot (rebooting.com)

I’m excited about these significant opportunities for reflection brought to us by Reboot, who highlights themes of Renewal, Reflection, Repentance, Atonement, Earth, Grief, Loss, Transition, Ritual, Democracy, Antisemitism, Jewish safety, Racism and more. There is a full High Holidays playlist of speakers and music and prayers. Together or alone, we can take this time to energize and reboot our souls. Click here to read about the local connections. Click to read A Partnership of the Generations | Reboot (rebooting.com) and find a special story cowritten by JSL’s own Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, Barbra Giles, and CEO Nancy Siegel Heinrich. Thank you to our dedicated readers for your support, encouragement and love over the past five years.

Shabbat Shalom.

WHY WE REMEMBER

Why can a single melody from years ago unlock a long-buried memory, while a life-altering trauma can disappear without a trace? These puzzles lie at the heart of one of the mind’s greatest mysteries: memory. I notice that working and living at Jewish Senior Life, memory becomes more than just a personal experience; it becomes a communal project. Stories echo through shared meals, card games and hallway conversations, connecting us

It was 3:00 a.m. when I sat up in bed, awakened by a dream of my father juggling. He often kept weighted cloth balls in his pockets and would juggle three while balancing on a Bongo Board.  In that moment,

Yom HaShoah 2025: Memory in an Age of Denial

As we observe Yom HaShoah this year, the haunting echoes of the Holocaust feel closer than ever—not because of our proximity to the past, but because of the growing shadows of denial and indifference in the present. For decades, we’ve
