THE SKLART

THE SKLART

This week, members of the family of Leo Sklarzl gathered to celebrate the installation of a giant metal piece of kinetic art he designed that now resides on Ring Road in West Bloomfield on the campus of Meer Apartments at JSL. The crowd took some time to speak of Leo’s many acts of gemillut chassidim, acts of loving kindness that brought him immense pleasure. His son, David spoke of Leo as a joy maker who loved to surprise and delight friends and strangers alike. Everyone who knew him said his affable nature and generous heart made him a beacon of light. People were drawn to him. His beautiful widow, Libby, and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with cousins and friends were present for the special ceremony. It was a particularly sunny evening and perfect weather as Meer Administrator Marcia Mittelman happily welcomed the group. The sculpture moved in the breeze beside me as I said the following:

“From the time he was a young child, Leo exhibited a spirit of resilience and determination. Growing up in a Jewish home in Detroit where Yiddish was the primary language, Leo faced the challenge of learning English at the age of five. Despite a rocky start in high school, he went on to attend and graduate from Cass Tech and later Wayne State.

Leo and Libby Sklar made significant contributions to many nonprofits including Jewish Home and Aging, aka, Jewish Federation Apartments which became Jewish Senior Life. Leo and Libby supported the new Meer Apartments, built in 2000, bringing beauty and dignity to the lives of so many older adults.

Leo’s passion for art and storytelling was another facet of his vibrant personality. A self-taught artist and avid collector, he sought beauty in the world and enjoyed sharing it and making it for himself and for those around him.

We are fortunate to stand in the presence of one of Leo’s unique creations—a kinetic sculpture that the Sklar family donated to JSL in his memory. This wonderful piece of art, constantly in motion, echoes Leo’s lively life and is a testament to his creative spirit and his desire to bring joy and wonder to the lives of others.  As we admire this moving sculpture, we are reminded of Leo’s ability to see the world through an artist’s eyes.

Leo Sklar made a lasting, positive difference in the world. His life reminds us that one person’s kindness and generosity can indeed make the world a better place.

Thank you to the Sklar family and thank you Leo, for brightening our campus at JSL. Your spirit will live on in the laughter, love, and kindness you spread throughout your remarkable life.  You will never be forgotten.”

When you come and visit the West Bloomfield campus of JSL, don’t forget to drive by the SKLART and watch it gracefully move, waving to you and the wildlife and the residents on their balconies enjoying a beautiful day. It’s certain to bring a smile to your face.

Shabbat Shalom.

Her house was her badge of independence, of survival. She walked her terrier, Max, twice a day, paid every bill with precise timing, and cooked her own meals. When friends asked her secret, she’d smile and say,
