8/80 SPOTLIGHT: ROZ GARBER
By Jo Strausz Rosen
Former Detroit Public Schools teacher Roz Garber has a witty and self-deprecating personality. She has more energy than women half her age, performing yoga and walking daily. She is excited to participate in a very special occasion as she is one of eight honorees in the 30th Annual Eight Over Eighty celebration on May 21.
When not reading or capturing the latest on TV, Roz loves keeping up with her children and grandchildren by phone and email. She plays Mahjong weekly on her electronic table with a group of friends.
Competitive and fun loving, she also completes the Wordle and Spelling Bee daily. Sundays begin at Yad Ezra where she packs grocery bags for the long lines of community members who give her their grocery lists to shop the Food Bank shelves. She decorates her home with art her daughter painted as well as memorabilia from her many trips around the world, when she traveled to India, China, Africa, and Peru by herself. She was proud to share information about trips to Israel where she and her husband Max Garber, of blessed memory, taught English at a boarding school for Ethiopian and Israeli born boys during the four week “Winter in Netanya” Program. She also helped Senior students at the Tchernichovsky Public High School prepare for their college entrance exams.
An active member of Congregation B’nai Moshe, Roz served for many years on the Kiddush Lunch Team on Shabbos during pre-pandemic days. She enjoys her many volunteer opportunities with Hadassah and National Council of Jewish Women. We are delighted to recognize her contributions in our community! We hope you will join us May 21 for a Gala Luncheon at Congregation Shaarey Zedek at the 30th Annual Eight Over Eighty Celebration! jslmi.org/8over80
