Living With Dementia
By Jo Strausz Rosen
Are you or a family member living with dementia? What can the Dorothy & Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program do for you? It has been providing engaging programs and services for people living with dementia and their family care partners for over 20 years. With 2 locations in West Bloomfield and Southfield, this lively activity center open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., helps people living with dementia stay purposefully engaged in activities like music, art, yoga and other physical exercise, cooking, group discussions and cognitive exercises. When participants spend the day, or even a morning or afternoon at the Program, their care partners benefit by regaining time for themselves, knowing their family member is cared for and engaged.
The Positive Approach To Care
People living with dementia may lead full lives. To maximize this potential, The Brown Program uses the Positive Approach to Care (PAC) model, which focuses on what life skills are intact rather than what is lost. Unlike older methods of dementia care that measure cognitive decline, PAC focuses on the abilities and personality traits that are present in the moment to create meaningful connections and strengthen personal relationships. This philosophy of care enhances positive interactions for the person living with dementia and their care partner.
The Brown Adult Day Program
While at the Brown Program your loved one will receive individualized attention, socialization and recreation, therapeutic activities, opportunities for creative expression in music and art, health monitoring, access to nutritious, kosher meals and snacks, and spiritual and cultural support. Caring for someone living with dementia takes a toll on the person giving the care. With the Brown Program in their lives, care partners receive respite from 24-hour care and flexible program hours. Additionally, care partners have access to social work support services including support groups, resource referrals, educational workshops, and crisis assistance.
In collaboration with family care partners, the Brown Adult Day Program helps participants age in place by providing support and respite services to their care partners, while enhancing the participants’ quality of life. As anyone who cares for someone living with dementia knows, the quality of care can be best measured by who provides it. And you won’t find a more committed, compassionate, and capable staff than the professionals at the Brown Program.
Brown Day Program Staff
With an average staff tenure of 13 years, the Brown Program team creates lasting, impactful relationships with program participants as well as their loved ones.
All staff receive routine training in Positive Approach to Care, (PAC) First aid and CPR and response protocols for regular occurrences and emergency situations. A registered nurse who knows the medical needs of every participant, including medications and their side effects, is on staff at each location. Our on-staff social worker creates individual care plans for each participant and provides resources for care partners. Additionally, art, music, and movement specialists provide interactive engagement on a weekly basis.
