Reflections from Jewish Senior Life CEO Nancy Heinrich at the 2026 Annual Meeting
At Jewish Senior Life, we often talk about creating "Moments That Matter." They happen every day. Sometimes they are large and memorable. More often, they are simple acts of kindness that can completely change someone's day.
A smile from a housekeeper. A warm greeting from a receptionist. A caregiver who takes an extra moment to listen. A dining room server who knows a resident's favorite meal.
These interactions may seem small, but they remind people of something deeply important: You matter.
That philosophy is at the heart of everything we do at Jewish Senior Life.
As we gathered for our 17th Annual Meeting, we reflected on the many ways our staff, residents, volunteers, donors, and community partners help create these meaningful moments every day. Together, they form the foundation of a community that has been serving older adults in metropolitan Detroit for nearly 120 years.
Our residents benefit from engaging programs, lifelong learning opportunities, cultural experiences, wellness initiatives, and the companionship that comes from living among friends. Through partnerships like Live & Learn with Oakland University and the Marcia Applebaum Older Adults' Enrichment Fund, residents have access to educational opportunities that bring the excitement of college-level learning directly into their communities.
Yet what truly sets Jewish Senior Life apart is not simply the programs we offer. It is who we are.
Jewish Senior Life was founded on Jewish values and remains proudly Jewish-sponsored. For generations, Jewish senior living communities provided a welcoming home for individuals who often felt like outsiders elsewhere. While much has changed over the past century, recent events have reminded many of us why these communities continue to matter.
In a world where antisemitism has once again become a visible reality, many older adults are seeking a place where they can openly embrace their Jewish identity, celebrate traditions, and feel a strong sense of belonging. Jewish Senior Life provides that opportunity while remaining committed to welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds.
Inclusion is one of our core values. Our communities are open and welcoming to everyone, reflecting both our mission and our belief in treating every individual with dignity and respect.
As we look toward the future, we continue investing in the safety and security of our residents and staff. Enhanced security measures, campus improvements, staff training, and partnerships with local law enforcement help ensure that our communities remain safe and supportive places to call home.
At the same time, we recognize that security alone is not what defines us.
