This week, I had the privilege of attending a Siyum, a Jewish celebration marking the completion of Torah study. At Jewish Senior Life, this week’s Siyum celebrated the conclusion of the Fall Semester, of “Live and Learn” a program which included 30 class sessions and 58 hours of university-level programming, attended by 99 residents at Meer Apartments. Since the program’s launch in June 2024, 108 residents have participated, and they can’t stop talking about it.
The students range in age from 78 to 105. When Dr. Ora Pescovitz, President of Oakland University, addressed the group this week, it was clear that she, too, was inspired by the residents’ enthusiasm. She brought along the professors who teach these courses, each of whom shared their deep appreciation for the experience of teaching older adults.
