MEANINGFUL MOMENTS

MEANINGFUL MOMENTS

This week at JSL, I’m reflecting on some important moments that crossed my path. I had the privilege of attending an event hosted by Nancy and David Gad-Harf, who had just returned from a Jewish National Fund volunteer trip to Israel. Later that evening, we attended a larger presentation by Jewish National Fund USA at Temple Israel and learned about the program Special in Uniform. The program works with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), helps soldiers with special needs find meaningful roles within the military, empowering them to thrive.  Lt. Col. (Ret.) Tiran Attia, a key figure behind the initiative, shared the powerful mission of Special in Uniform, a program built on three guiding pillars:

  1. Bound by Bravery: Honoring the courage of soldiers with disabilities, empowering them to embrace their strength and resilience.
  2. Spectrum of Talent: Recognizing each soldier’s unique abilities and providing training in areas like technology, logistics, and communication to foster purpose and achievement.
  3. The Music Inclusion Program: Offering a creative outlet through music, helping soldiers build confidence and form connections.

Through these initiatives, Special in Uniform not only enhances the lives of soldiers but also shifts perceptions about their abilities, showing that every person, regardless of their challenges, has something meaningful to contribute. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we all agreed to embrace our differences?

Jewish National Fund (JNF) has always been dedicated to supporting Israel’s growth. Through Special in Uniform, JNF ensures that soldiers with disabilities are integrated into the IDF and empowered to contribute to society. This commitment to inclusivity reflects Israel’s belief that everyone has something unique to offer. These stories of hope inspire us to believe in the power of potential and the importance of embracing every individual’s contribution. https://www.jnf.org/our-work/disabilities-special-needs/special-in-uniform

Tovah Feldshuh is a rockstar (literally), before she became a celebrated actress, she was a rock singer.  She has graced both the stage and screen for decades. Known for her diverse and powerful roles, 5’3 Feldshuh has been recognized with six Emmy nominations and multiple Tony nods for her performances. Most recently, she starred in Netflix’s Nobody Wants This, adding to her extensive list of accomplishments.

Her recent visit to Detroit this week was a true treat for our community. During her time at The Henry Ford Museum, she was visibly moved by the experience, sharing her appreciation for the history and innovation around her.

But it was her time spent at Congregation Shaarey Zedek Tuesday night that truly resonated with those in attendance. Speaking to over 600 women as part of Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy Signature night, she showcased her wit, intellect, and inspiring spirit. Her speech was a mix of great humor and heart, leaving everyone in the room motivated and empowered.

Feldshuh’s story, especially her work in the iconic Golda’s Balcony, continues to inspire audiences everywhere. It’s an honor to see someone so grounded, yet so influential, in both her career and the impact she has on others. As a woman who has truly changed the world with her work, she embodies strength, humor, and passion, making her a perfect example of the incredible power women hold. It was very special to attend this event with my daughter, Lindsey.  It’s been a meaningful week…. I hope yours was too!

Shabbat Shalom.
