SIYUM – A CELEBRATION OF LEARNING AND GROWTH
This week, I had the privilege of attending a Siyum, a Jewish celebration marking the completion of Torah study. At Jewish Senior Life, this week’s Siyum celebrated the conclusion of the Fall Semester, of “Live and Learn” a program which included 30 class sessions and 58 hours of university-level programming, attended by 99 residents at Meer Apartments. Since the program’s launch in June 2024, 108 residents have participated, and they can’t stop talking about it.
The students range in age from 78 to 105. When Dr. Ora Pescovitz, President of Oakland University, addressed the group this week, it was clear that she, too, was inspired by the residents’ enthusiasm. She brought along the professors who teach these courses, each of whom shared their deep appreciation for the experience of teaching older adults.
The energy in the building was palpable, with residents eagerly exchanging ideas and reflections. I left feeling deeply inspired and incredibly grateful to the generous donors who make university-level learning at JSL possible. Several residents shared personal stories about how these classes have enriched their lives. One resident, Edie, age 100, described how “Live and Learn” classes have brought a renewed sense of purpose and meaning to her life. One resident, Joy, a former school principal, shared how her return to academic pursuits at the age of 82 has brought her unprecedented happiness. She said that she and her husband have formed lasting friendships at Meer and are experiencing their happiest years yet.
As we know, aging can bring changes in identity, routine, and social connections, sometimes leading to feelings of isolation. However, educational opportunities, especially in group settings, provide a powerful antidote, fostering personal growth, deeper connection, and a renewed sense of purpose. Learning is life affirming. At Jewish Senior Life, we’re committed to offering our residents vibrant lives through social engagement, intellectual stimulation, and skill-building. Our goal is to one day expand this program of offering high level university courses to all JSL residents.
For many, returning to the classroom can be life changing. Research shows that engaging with new subjects helps older adults rediscover passions they may have set aside. JSL offers residents a pathway to rediscovery. Together with Wendy Handler, the Live and Learn Community Project Consultant, residents work to identify the courses and materials they yearn to explore. These classes provide an opportunity to dive into new topics, reflect on personal life experiences, and engage in ideas that foster a deeper sense of self. This kind of intellectual engagement is vital for finding meaning and fulfillment in later years…and isn’t that something we all desire?
At JSL, we’re living the Chai life! Join us on this inspiring journey.
Shabbat Shalom.
